Eva's 1st Christmas

I know I know I know. It has been WAY too long since I last posed anything. It's been over 6 weeks and time has flown by incredibly fast. That will change, however, and I plan on having several posts in January because January of 2011 was very signifcant for our family and is worthy of some reflection But first we start with Christmas.....

This Christmas was absolutely amazing. We were so excited for many reasons. First, this was our 1st Christmas with our love, our joy, our blessing, Eva. Second, we were blessed to be able to go away to Florida and spend the holiday with my parents. Third, we were in warm weather (John & I don't necessarily need the snow anymore, but we know that we'll have to give Eva that experience). Everything else we experienced was just icing on the cake.

Christmas morning was exciting I have to say. In years past, when it's been just us adult kids, we would schlep around the house all day, eating, watching TV, napping. Then we'd eat dinner and after we were totally full, we would open gifts. Needless to say, I was NOT about to wait THAT long to see my baby open up her gifts.

We had so much fun watching Eva rip open packages and pull tissue paper out of gift bags. She was so happy after the 1st gift that she didn't even realize that she had LOTS more gifts to open
The very 1st gift she opened. A purse with Fairies on it. Oh the things that can be put inside of it!

By the time Eva opened up her last gift, she was pooped! So she took her gift over to the couch and chilled out

After her nap, I just HAD to put her in this darling Christmas dress that her Aunt Nancy got her. It is so beautiful and Eva loved wearing it. She loves twirling in dresses. We took oodles of pics of her in this dress but these are my favorite!

Dinner was amazing as always....thanks Mom!! For the rest of the evening, Eva played with her toys, her Daddy & Poppi, read her books, and got to watch Christmas Dora (on DVR) What an awesome Christmas Day. I loved every minute of it

Referral-versary!!

On this very day last year was the first time that we got to see our little girl's face. The week between being number #1 on the waitlist and getting the ever famous "Referral Call" wreaked havoc on me.....probably more than I'd like to admit Fortunately I was able to keep very, very busy and not be at all surprised when The Call actually came. Read all about that wonderful day here.

At the time, we were not allowed to post our child's picture for security/privacy reasons stipulated by our adoption agency and the Government of Ethiopia. However, that is no longer the case! It's simply amazing how much kids grow and progress in a year. Here is what our little cupcake looked like on Referral Day:

And here she is in all of her preciousness today:

Every day we look at this little girl and our hearts melt. We are truly blessed by what God has allowed us to do by raising her. Every day we see a little something more in her that reminds us that God's hands were all over this adoption. There is no way she is not our daughter!

One Year Ago....

One year ago today, we were officially #1 on the waitlist for a referral. I remember feeling excited, nervous, anxious and wondering if we would be in that #1 spot for days or weeks. You can read all about where we were one year ago today.

It's amazing how much has happened in exactly one year. We had no idea that on this date, exactly 4 months later, our daughter would be home with us. And today, exactly 8 months from the day we brought her home, she is totally thriving! Just in the last 4 to 6 weeks, Eva has been showing us another layer to her personality. She is such a cuddler now. I don't mean just sitting on my lap. I mean sitting on my lap, leaning her head against my chest, not because she's tired, or hurt. Just because. Because that's where she wants to be.

Every night after we read our bedtime stories, we rock on the rocking chair and sing songs....Rockasong. Usually after I finish singing, she's ready to be in her crib laying down, calling it a night. The last couple of weeks though, she has been holding on tighter and tighter, for longer periods of time. I don't know if it's because subconsciously she's going through something based on what she was going through and where she was this time last year or because she has allowed herself to feel more comfortable with me and is willing to attach more. I'm praying it's the latter because that means that God is healing her soul.

Could there be any more greatness today? Yup! Today our baby girl is 21 months old today. The joy of my life is almost 2 years old. Wow!! I'm so blessed to be a witness to her amazing life. Today we took Eva to the zoo, one of her favorite places and then went out to lunch at our favorite Ethiopian restaurant. What a great way to celebrate our family. God is good!

This was the 1st time Eva fed herself the entire meal! And she did so well.
John & I tore the injera for her and she did the rest

We also had another big transition in our home today. Our baby girl is turning into a big girl.....a big little girl. And that means no more sleeping in the crib anymore.

She was so excited to be in her bed. She kept saying "Night, night!"

Trick or Treat!

I had been looking forward to Trick or Treat night for the past couple of months. Not for the candy, although that's okay, but to see my little Eva all dressed up in her little costume. I got her costume at the beginning of September. I needed something that was cute and warm because it doesn't matter how warm it is on the days leading up to October 31st, Halloween is always freezing here!

Trick or Treat night is not what it used to be when I was growing up. Now it's called Beggar's Night. And it's not always on October 31st. A group of people in municipal government determine what night it will be held on. Usually if Halloween falls on a weekend day, Beggar's Night will be moved to a day earlier in the week. I remember getting home and going out trick or treating when you knew grown ups would be at home to pass out candy and be out until 9 or 10 at night. Now there's only 2 hours to collect all the sugary goodness.

So, with costume on and candy bag in hand, John and I took Eva on her first Beggar's Night experience. We only took her to 6 houses, those of our closest neighbors, the ones we knew the best. They all just loved Eva's costume! She was shy walking up to the neighbors and didn't really want to talk much. She stayed in her dad's arms most of the time. We were only out for about 30 minutes and that was more than enough for me......I was freezing!

Once we got home, Eva got the hang of getting candy, as she started trick or treating from our stash! She tried her first Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and was hooked.

Fortunately, it didn't keep her up. She still went to sleep at her normal time. Thank God for small favors.

Readoption Hearing

Today was a very special day in the Mancini household. Today we had our Finalization Readoption hearing for Eva. Our appointment was at 3:00. We got to the courthouse around 2:30 and just a few minutes after 3:00 we were with our attorney in the magistrate's chambers. It went really quickly. We got sworn in and then the attorney and the magistrate asked us each a series of questions about our adoption process. Shortly after that, the magistrate declared that our foreign adoption was deemed legitimate by the State of Ohio and recognized that Eva is our child. We even received certified Adoption Certificates. Now we will be able to get her a U.S birth certificate and passport.

We decided to go through the readoption because we wanted her to be recognized in the State of Ohio as well as through the federal government and Ethiopia. We also wanted all of our adoption paperwork to be legitimate so that when we move, she will be recognized as our legal daughter. But we also did it because we needed to do an official name change. In Ethiopia, the child's middle & last name are that of the father. So, leaving Ethiopia, Eva's legal name was Melat John Mancini.

But as of today we would like to officially introduce Evangeline Maria Melat Mancini!!

Prayerful Decision

**When you least expect it, a seed is planted that you once told yourself
would not happen. Here's how it manifested in our family**

We got home from our 10-day vacation on July 23rd. The next day, July 24th was our 8-year wedding anniversary and I decided that no business would be attended to until Monday the 25th. The first thing I did Monday morning was to check my e-mail.

I read an e-mail from another member of our Ethiopia family support group, explaining that a multiracial girl, with a birthday on the 26th, was planning on being placed for adoption. I don’t know why, but that little girl resonated in me. I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I called John later in the afternoon and read him the e-mail. He was adamant about us not doing anything about it. We both agreed that if the Lord doesn’t call both of us, then neither of us can do anything about it.

The day of the little girl’s birthday I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I had all kinds of questions about where she was and what she was doing, who she was with and if they were celebrating her birthday with her. For the next several days I still could not stop thinking about her. Every day I would pray for her, her family, adoptive and birth. Every day I would ask God to take this thought out of my head if it truly was not from Him.
By August 3rd, I still could not get that little girl out of my head, so I sent an e-mail to the originator asking for contact information. Thankfully he responded right away, later that day. I also e-mailed a friend who has done both a domestic and international (Ethiopian) adoption asking for the name of her case worker who did her home study. She sent me information back the same day with the case worker’s name as well as the adoption agency she used. When I looked up the adoption agency on the internet it turns out that the adoption attorney who is handling this particular case is also the attorney who represents clients for this particular adoption agency. Not a coincidence! I read the information over and over for a day and then just decided to go ahead and call the attorney’s office. I figured all of these questions I had in my head may all be moot if a family has already started the process of adopting her.

Friday morning, August 5th, I gathered the courage and called the attorney’s office. I had a wonderful and informative conversation with his wife who also works in the office.  It turned out that she had not heard back from the birth mother after several attempts to make contact about their decision. She gave me lots of other very good information that made me feel a lot better about possibly going through with a domestic adoption.

On Saturday the 6th, at a makeup class (tumbling) for Eva, I met a couple that moved here not too long ago from Atlanta, GA.  The wife overheard me talking about adopting Eva from Ethiopia and told me that her daughter was also adopted through a domestic adoption. I introduced myself to her as well as the husband and she & I continued chatting. At the end of the class we agreed that we would exchange information and keep in touch with one another. It turns out that she and her husband are contemplating doing an international adoption. Not a coincidence! Praise God. Of course I told John about the meeting and the discussion that we had.
For the next few weeks I kept pretty busy during the day, but at night adoption questions lingered in my head.  Then on the (Aug) 17th,  I received an e-mail from AGCI with a special announcement that they were giving financial incentives to those returning families who were interested in pursuing another adoption. God always knows. With restrained excitement, I told John about the e-mail. On the 21st I finally broke down and sent the AGCI Ohio Regional Director an e-mail asking questions regarding the home study. On the 27th I sent my AGCI Ethiopia Case Manager and e-mail letting her know that there may be an interest in a 2nd adoption. At this point I just wanted to gather enough information for John and I to be able to sit down and discuss this decision with everything on the table. In between receiving responses back from the 2 e-mails I sent, I started researching adoption grant organizations. I already knew that if we were going to be able to do this at all, we were going to need help, grant help. That’s because I am not going to be able to work this time. I’m at home with Eva. Every night while I laid in bed I prayed and asked God if this was His will for us, to prepare John’s heart for it, and if it wasn’t His will, to take this crazy notion out of my head for good. I prayed this prayer for several weeks.

Finally, on Labor day (Sept. 5th), I couldn’t take it anymore. I was increasingly having problems falling asleep at night. I had spent the last night tossing and turning, huffing and puffing. I even woke John up and he asked me if there was anything that I wanted to talk about. I told him that I didn’t want to talk about it at that time (it was 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning), that we would talk about it in the morning. That morning of Sept 5th I finally mustered up the courage to let John know everything that was on my mind, how I had contacted AGCI with my preliminary questions, everything. I soon learned that John had been praying as well. First he was capturing the thought and dismissing it every time it popped in his head. Then he found himself dreaming about it at night, waking up and still trying to dismiss the dream. After a while he started praying for peace about this adoption. By the time we sat down to discuss this, God had prepared both our hearts for this second adoption.

The next day I contacted AGCI and spoke with someone in Inquiry Services about our situation and what our status was in regards to our first adoption. Usually, their policy states that after a 1st adoption you must be home at least 9 months before starting a 2nd adoption. However, because the waitlist is estimated to be 18 to 24 months, they’ve revised it to having the 2nd post placement (6 month) report approved by AGCI staff.
This decision was such a big one for us, for me. I wasn't able to be my true self until I met John almost 10 years ago. I no longer had to pretend that I liked or didn't like something. We have always been able to talk about ANYTHING. But these last couple of months leading up to this decision, I could feel myself regressing. I wasn't open about my feelings. I would only show a portion of them for fear that there was going to be dissension. I became a little distant and not as communicative because I didn't want to create an argument. I was so afraid that John would chastise me for these feelings that I somewhat reverted back to that 20-something girl in a relationship that tries not to rock the boat.

But the truth is, John wasn't like that, isn't like that, and has never been like that. That fear was Satan trying to put that doubt in my head from the very onset. Satan knows what bringing another little beautiful gem in this family will do, and he was trying to thwart it from the very beginning. I'm blessed that John and I have the wonderful bond that we do because we were able to speak the truth through all the lies and know that God is with us throughout this journey.

We have officially started our 2nd adoption....from Ethiopia....for another little girl. Please pray for us & keep us in your prayers as we begin this next phase of our journey as a family of 3 working to become a family of 4.

Letter to Our Little Girl

Dear Eva,

Today you turned 20 months old, and you've been home with us for 7 months! What a joy it's been getting to know you these past several months. When we first brought you home, you were just barely walking. You would take a couple of steps and fall down. You had no climbing abilities and you only had 4 teeth.

When I look at you today, you have a total of 10 teeth with 2 more coming in as I type this, you're running through the house, holding your own with 2 springer spaniels who are trying to lick your face off, climbing the stairs, and finally able to eat the one fruit that you've been able to say for a couple of months now....apple.

There is so much that I've watched you learn these last 7 months that I am sometimes in awe. You are so smart and all you have to do is see me or your dad do something once and you've got it down. You love bananas. You love to take baths. You absolutely love music and you love to dance just as much. You love to color and read books, so much so that we can't go anywhere without having a few of your books with us to keep you entertained. Your favorite shows are Oswald, Little Bear, and Dora the Explorer.

You've gone from not knowing or understanding any English to being able to understand whatever instructions I give you. Your vocabulary is well over 100 words and just the other day you started saying 'band-aid', 'teacher', 'doctor', 'boo-boo' (as in being hurt), 'work' and so many more.

I am so blessed to be your mom. There is no greater joy than rocking you at night and then seeing your shining face in the morning. You are so beautiful inside and out. I have loved watching your personality flourish. You are such a sweet girl. Being a stay-at-home mom has been one of the happiest times of my life.

Our prayer for you is that you grow up loving life, loving who you are in Christ, and being happy in whatever it is that you decide to pursue. Our hope is that you become an independent, open-minded, and compassionate young lady who strives to be a positive influence in your community.

We love you very much and always will. You are our heart and joy. You are such a blessing in our lives!

Love, Daddy & Mama

Apple Pickin'

About 2 1/2 weeks ago, we went apple picking. We had to go during a particular weekend because that is when our favorite apple, Honeycrisp, is ready for pickings!! John used to go apple picking all throughout his childhood and then passed that along to his (now) adult children. So you know we HAD to take Eva.....her very first apple picking season. We decided to go on the first day, a Friday and luckily there was hardly anybody there during the day, so we had all kind of wonderful choices! Eva had so much fun.

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 10

Day 10 - July 23, 2011
The Road Trip Home

With a peaceful night's sleep (the first one in 7 days), I woke up totally refreshed. I talked to my grandmother the night before and she said she was feeling better so we made arrangements to see her today. After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, we went just 40 minutes up the road. This was the first meeting between Eva and her 96 year-old great-grandmother. And it went very well.

We only stayed for a couple of hours. We were past due on Eva's naptime and we didn't want to get home too late. We said our goodbyes and started on our 3-hour road trip home. It was a great ending to a great vacation and by bedtime we were all snuggled into our own beds....best sleep in 10 days!!

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 9

Day 9 - July 22, 2011
Back in Boston, heading to PA

Today was a L-O-N-G day to say the least. All 3 of us woke up, showered, dressed and had to be at breakfast by 9 am. That was the cutoff. We made it with 2 minutes to spare. Eva was exceptionally cranky today starting at breakfast. I think she was just tired of the whole thing...ready to be home and in bed. We disembarked by 10:30 and were at the airport by 11.

Waiting, waiting for our 3 o'clock flight. Eva only took a nap for about 45 minutes. Given all the travelling, lack of restful naps, and teething, it was no wonder that she fussed the entire flight. But our flight wasn't to Columbus, it was to Pittsburgh. Once we landed we grabbed our luggage and got shuttle service to our hotel. By the time we settled in it was 6:00. Room service and bed was the order for the rest of the evening. With a nice full belly, Eva went out like a light.

Just one more travel day left!

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 8

Day 8 - July 21, 2011
Last full day at sea

Our 2nd day at sea and another lazy day. The morning started off with Eva singing so we got up and went to breakfast. Then we came back to the room and packed enough essentials to last us for a while on the sun deck.

I was up there for hours. John and Eva were only up there for a little while. John thought that Eva was getting cranky/sleepy so he decided to do some laps with her. According to John, he took her to lunch and then did the laps so she would fall asleep easier. Eva was asleep for about 15 minutes when some man decided to announce to John that she was sleeping. That did it....she was officially awake! It actually turned out to be a good thing because the two of them actually saw dolphins swimming alongside the cruise ship. Too bad they didn't have the camera (it was in the bag with me). I would have LOVED to have seen that!

I finally went back to the room around 2:30 (yes, my skin was red and tingling) and began the packing escapade. Luckily it only took 2 hours to get all 3 of us packed. Then we all got showered and dressed and headed down for the final portrait session. Eva did great! This session was supposed to be all about her but I got in a couple of them. The dress that she's wearing we got specifically for these pictures for my mom. Afterwards we had a wonderful last dinner and called it a night.

Tomorrow is still an early day...we've got to get off the boat.

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 7

Day 7 - July 20, 2011
Full day at sea heading to Boston

Today was our first full day at sea.....Lazy day!! So lazy that after we got dressed and ate breakfast, we came back to the room and took our nap from 11:30 to 1:30. SOOOO OFF OUR SCHEDULE!

Then we ate a little bit of lunch and headed to the sun deck to listen to some music for a while and then walked around the ship from one end to the other. We hung out in the playroom but not for long because Eva was not impressed with the toys Our goal was to get Eva good and tired so that she would be ready for bed after dinner. Well she was certainly tired but wouldn't settle down long enough to go to sleep, so in the stroller she went and John took her to the walking deck to do some laps....A LOT MORE THAN 5!! And wouldn't you know it, just as John is wheeling her down the corridor towards our room, there was so much noise that it woke her up. She finally fell back asleep 40 minutes later.

Good nighty-night!

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 6

Day 6 - July 19, 2011
Last day in Bermuda

The first thing I did this morning when I woke up was go down to the Gangway deck and check the weather. As a tourist I was hoping that it would be a sunny beautiful day so we could take Eva to the beach. But as someone returning home again I hoped that it was still raining as the island was under a 2 1/2 month drought! The winner was rain....cold, windy rain. By the time we showered, dressed and ate breakfast, the rain had stopped. We made our way off the boat to buy a few things.

After a couple of hours we were back on the boat for lunch and Eva's nap. She slept longer than usual and by the time all 3 of us got refreshed again, it was 4:30. All guests had to be on the ship by 5:00 set to depart at 5:30. John suggested that we go up on a deck to watch the ship pull away, so we made our way to the sun deck. All cruise ships entering and leaving Bermuda must have a Bermudian pilot on board to navigate the ship through the coral reefs.

The rain had stopped, clouds parted, sun brightly shining. It turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. As I was looking down at the wharf, I saw a man and woman so familiar that I had to call out to them. It was my aunt and uncle! I don't know how long they were there waiting to see us but there they were. I kept saying to John that I had to get off the boat to say goodbye but I couldn't because it was just after 5:00. I didn't have my cell phone with me so John went back down to our room to get it. Just then my aunt's son, a Bermuda pilot, called my name and was standing behind me. I was told later that he requested to pilot the cruise ship out so that he could have a chance to see us! I'm so glad he found us. That ship was HUGE and there were so many places we could have been. Family is so wonderful!!

It was so wonderful to see family again just as we were sailing off. I miss them already! We watched the ship sailaway for the next 45 minutes. Bye Bermie..........I hope we get to see you soon!!

Then we got dressed up and had some portraits taken and then had dinner at the Venetian restaurant. Tonight it was all about John & I getting just our portraits done, but Eva looked so cute that we had to get a couple of shots with her in it too

By the time we were finished with dinner, Eva was worn out but would not settle down enough to go to sleep. We went back to the room, put her in her pjs and stroller and did laps on the walking deck, 5 to be exact. Another great day. Tomorrow is a full day at sea.

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 5

Day 5 - July 18, 2011
2nd Day in Bermuda

I had a plan this morning: Take the ferry or the bus into Hamilton (capital city) and visit family, meet up with another Aunt & Uncle for lunch, then head to the beach. Part of that plan was blown because we woke up to seriously cloudy and windy skies and rain.

We improvised. We showered, dressed, got breakfast and went back to the room and got our first power nap. We woke up around 11:30, got freshened up and got off the ship to meet my Aunt and Uncle. They picked us up and we went to this wonderful restaurant on the beach called Coconuts. Eva took to my Aunt Althea right away, just chattering away being her usual cute self.

John gave Eva a taste of Ginger Beer soda....

Deciding if she likes it....

She LOVED it!!

We had a great lunch and then they took us into Hamilton to see if we could visit some different family members but they weren't available so they brought us back to the ship.

By this time it was really raining and Eva was enjoying playing in ALL the puddles on the way back to the ship. We all changed into some dry clothes and I thought for sure Eva would go down early for the night since she only had one hour-long nap. It took us almost 2 hours to get her to sleep. John finally had to put her in the stroller and take laps around the walking deck....5 laps to be exact. She was finally zonked when they came back to the room.

We'll see what our final day in Bermuda holds in store for us!

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 4

Day 4 - July 17, 2011
Bermuda, here we are!

This was the day John and I have talked about and planned for for over 3 months....meeting the family. We got to Bermuda at 11:00 and were cleared to get off the ship shortly thereafter.

Phone charged up, I started making calls to let Aunts, Uncles and Cousins know that we had arrived. We made plans to meet in the afternoon. The 3 of us showered, dressed, ate breakfast, got off the ship and did a bit of walking around and window shopping. I knew that Eva was not going to get her regular nap so I was glad when she fell asleep in the stroller while we were out and about.

We finally met up with a few family members around 2:30. So great! They had to run an errand before the rest of the family arrived so Eva and I went with. Eva was so relaxed and comfortable with her new family members... just chatting away and being the natural charmer that she is!

When we got back to Dockyard, the other family was arriving and one by one was meeting them. It was so wonderful to see her getting loved on. And because John and I were so happy and excited and comfortable, it made her feel that way as well. Eva had no anxiety or stress.

With everyone having arrived, all 13 of us headed to the Frog & Onion for dinner.  Around that same time, Eva was getting just a bit cranky. She had only had a 40 minute power nap up to this point. I was able to get her to take another nap and by the time dinner was being served, she was awake after another 40-minute nap.

Dinner was great. Being with family was priceless. In fact, Eva was so comfortable with her newly-introduced family that she allowed 2 of her cousins and her great aunt to walk around with her WITHOUT ME!! She even allowed her 2 cousins to pick her up and hold her!

After 2 hours we finally had to part ways. Everyone had to work the next day. We all gave tons of hugs and kisses and took oodles of pics one last time.

After we said our goodbyes for the 20th time, John, Eva and I went back to the ship, locked ourselves in our room and called it a night! More family to see tomorrow

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 3

Day 3 - July 16, 2011
Our 1st full day at sea.

The last couple of weeks Eva has been waking up between 7 and 7:30 instead of her usual 8:00. I thought that with us being in a stateroom with no windows and pitch black, that she would sleep later or sleep until we woke her up. Nope.....up at 7:30! Up we all were, got dressed and headed to the buffet for breakfast. It was a gorgeous day at sea so we walked around a little while and found some other fun places and stores that we missed the day before.

We took Eva to the kid's pool and she had such a blast. After splashing around for almost an hour, we got some lunch and laid down for Eva's nap. We had to be good and rested 'cause it's Formal night. This was the evening we were waiting for because we knew we were gonna have lots of portraits taken. All dressed up, we made our way to the photo studios. There were 5 different backgrounds. We were able to get a slew of portraits taken at each station and still be done in under 20 minutes. It pays to get there early!!

After photos we went to the Aqua restaurant (Dining room) and had dinner.

It was still early yet so after dinner we went to the Stardust Theater and saw a show. Eva LOVED all the singing and dancing. In fact, she was dancing around so much that she tired herself out and started crawling around. I wanted to take pics but flash photography was forbidden due to the cast members. Believe me when I say that Eva stole the show in her own little corner We only made it halfway through the show when Eva decided she was done performing. And 45 minutes later she was sound asleep.

What a fun day!!

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 2

Day 2 - July 15, 2011
Cruise Day!

 Happy Birthday to Me!!

Our day started at 4 am. Not Eva though...she was awake and talking at 2:30. You think she knew where we were going? With everyone showered and dressed, we checked out of our hotel room and were on the first shuttle to the airport by 5 am headed to Boston. Eva still proved that she is a GREAT traveler. The 90 minute plane ride was a cake walk compared to a 15- hour flight.

We got to the Cruise Terminal super early and had to wait a few hours before we could check in. John took Eva all around the area while I chilled out for a little bit - some ME time

We were eventually able to get on the boat around 11:30 but our staterooms weren't ready until 2:00, so we had to go to the buffet restaurant with our carry-on luggage. Fortunately Eva was able to get a 45-minute nap after she ate some lunch.

After lunch we went out on the sun deck, found a lounge chair and decided to relax there for a while until our staterooms were getting ready. We got into our rooms at 2:00 just like they said and our luggage came shortly after. I'm the kind of person that needs to unpack and get organized so I took the next hour and a half to do just that. John asked me to make myself busy around the ship for a bit while he helped Eva work on something for me. When I got back to the room, John & Eva gave me some birthday cards. Then we walked around and checked out our cruise ship, ate dinner and called it a night.

Eva LOVED sleeping on the pullman porter bed. Her head was at the top of the rail and we put 2
large pillows at the foot of the rail. She was snug as a bug in a rug every night

What a wonderful birthday. Admittedly it was a very llloonnngg day but I was blessed to be able to spend it with my family!

Eva's 1st Family Vacation - Day 1

Day 1 - July 14, 2011
Road Trip

The day started early at 7 am. John still had to pack and I had a couple of last-minute items to get in the luggage. After getting breakfast and doing some banking, we were able to hit the road around 11:30. We made our way to Pittsburgh where we spent the night. About 30 minutes from our hotel, we decided to take a rest area pit stop. Miss Eva needed to stretch her legs and get out of that car seat for a few minutes.

We were supposed to visit my grandmother so that she could finally meet Eva but had to postpone because she was not feeling well. We got to our hotel around 3:30 and didn't leave the room.

We ate dinner in our room about 6 o'clock and soon after that it was lights out. Tomorrow we fly to Boston and the real adventure begins!
